Perennial flowers are the best...  I planted these wildflowers last year and it took a while for them to come up and blossom.  They went away in the late fall only to pop up by themselves this in the spring.

I can see having annuals as hanging plants, but not for planting in the ground.

    Not sure if they would have survived our winter with 150 feet of snow but glad they survived yours!
